The following ticket is the one that catches most of us off guard...NO PROOF OF INSURANCE. Now, even though you have valid auto insurance, when you received your insurance certificate in the mail, you set it in a safe place so that you would remember to put into your car. A few days later, you are pulled over and the officer asks for your proof of insurance. The insurance certificate that’s in your car just happens to be a few days past the expiration date. After explaining what had happened, the officer writes you a ticket and tells you, “If you bring your proof of insurance to court, the Judge will probably dismiss the ticket." Here is where this ticket could cost you plenty. First, you may need to take time off work to go to court, which you really can’t afford to do, or you could use a vacation or sick day if you have that option. Either way it cost you. If you don’t fight this ticket, it will cost you $400.00 to the State of Michigan, plus the amount for the ticket. So, you go to court, hoping the Judge dismisses the ticket. If he does, great. You just saved yourself over a $100.00. It's still not over though. You now must go to Secretary of State Office because the Drivers Responsibility Law has nothing to do with the courts rulings. This ticket will cost you $200.00 for two years in a row. This $200.00 is given to the Secretary of State, made out to the State of Michigan. If you just can't afford this amount at the time, your license will be revoked until you pay it. If you find yourself in this situation and your license is revoked, you not only have the $200.00 to pay, you have an additional $125.00 you must pay for a license reinstatement fee. If you are able to do this and retain your license, just remember, you get to do it all over again next year. If that’s not bad enough, because you forgot to put that insurance paper in your car, it can get worse. Michigan has a lot of people, especially now, who just cannot afford to give away a weeks or more paycheck, let alone loose their job because of losing their license. So often what happens is that person continues driving because they have good insurance and they need to get to work in order to pay their bills, shop for food and clothes, etc. Then it happens...they get pulled over again. Now this is going to cost you a lot more money most likely your job because your car was just impounded, which all affect your ability to keep everything else you have going.

This ridiculous law, along with the other Driver Responsibility laws, can and does create a vicious cycle that destroys families, jobs and has caused people to loose their homes, put innocent and good people in jail. When you figure the cost of the officer pulling you over and writing you tickets, showing up in court, several court appearances, possible jail time for driving while your suspended, and then all of the cost to you for an attorney, time off work, maybe the loss your job and possibly your home. It only stands to reason this law has cost Michigan citizens a lot more money than it has brought in. With today’s economy and jobs hard to find, people cannot be without a license, especially because they forgot to put an updated insurance certificate in their car. What happened to warnings or show proof and the ticket would be dismissed? This law has cost Michigan residents hundreds of thousand of dollars, not only out of pocket but has wasted our tax dollars to enforce these laws.
